Instagram Link in Bio vs Sending the Link by DM

Link in bio or link by DM? An honest look at the pros and cons of each for Indian businesses, and a simple setup that uses both so no buyer slips through.

October 29, 2026 6 min read

“Link in bio” is probably the most-typed phrase in Instagram captions. It's also one of the leakiest steps in a sale. The viewer has to stop the reel, tap your name, find the link, tap it, and then find the right product on whatever page opens. Sending the link by DM skips most of that. But it isn't automatically better for every business. Here's an honest comparison and a setup that uses both.

How each one works

Link in bio

You put one link (or a few links) in your profile. Every caption says “link in bio”. Anyone who visits your profile can tap it. It's always there, it needs nothing from you once it's set, and it works for people who never comment.

Link by DM

Your caption says “Comment LINK and I'll send it to you”. When someone comments, they get a DM with the exact link for that reel. Done by hand, this is slow. Done with comment-to-DM automation, it happens in seconds.

Where link in bio falls short

  • Too many steps. Each tap is a chance to get distracted. Someone watching reels on the metro in Mumbai will often just keep scrolling.
  • The wrong page. Your bio usually points to a home page or a list of links. The viewer wanted the green saree from that reel, not your whole catalogue.
  • No conversation. You never find out who was interested. If they leave, there's no thread to follow up in.
  • Hard to attribute. When ten reels all say “link in bio”, you can't easily tell which reel sent the click.

Where the DM link falls short

  • It needs a comment first. Viewers who don't like commenting won't get the link. Some people are shy; some don't want their friends to see.
  • It needs setup. You have to write the DM, choose the keyword and keep the link updated when the product changes.
  • Message requests. If the person doesn't follow you, the DM may land in their Requests folder. A public reply like “Sent it to your DMs — check Requests if you don't see it 📩” helps.
  • Instagram's rules. A business can send one private reply per comment, within 7 days. Once the person replies to your DM, a 24-hour window opens for normal conversation. So the first message has to be useful on its own.

Side-by-side

  • Effort for the viewer: bio — several taps; DM — type one word, open one message.
  • Right product: bio — usually a general page; DM — the exact link for that reel.
  • Who was interested: bio — you don't know; DM — you have their username and a thread.
  • Follow-up: bio — none; DM — you can ask a question, share a size chart or collect a phone number.
  • Works without a comment: bio — yes; DM — no.
  • Setup: bio — once; DM — per campaign, unless you use an all-posts automation.

When link in bio is the right choice

Keep link in bio as your main route if your posts are mostly brand content rather than product content, if you have one main destination (your website or a single booking page), or if your audience rarely comments. A boutique that posts one hero product a week might be fine with a single well-organised bio link page.

When the DM link wins

Send the link by DM when each reel features a different product, when you want to know who's interested, or when the sale usually needs a question or two — size, delivery to Lucknow, colour availability. It also wins when you want leads: the same DM can ask for a phone number, and that number is saved with their Instagram username in your Leads list.

Use both: a setup that covers everyone

  1. Keep your bio link pointed at a simple page with your main categories. That's the fallback for people who don't comment.
  2. In each product reel's caption, write: “Comment LINK for this one, or tap the link in bio for the full collection.”
  3. Set an automation for that reel with the exact product link and a button.
  4. Set an “All posts” automation as a safety net for older posts, sending your general catalogue. In JaldiDM, the reel's own automation wins over the all-posts one, so nobody gets two DMs.
  5. Add a follow-before-link step only if growing followers matters to you. It adds a step, so test whether it costs you clicks.

A DM link message that gets clicked

“Hi! Here's the green Chanderi saree from the reel 💚 Sizes and delivery details are on the page. Reply here if you have a question and our team will help.” [View saree]

Name the product, keep it to two lines, use a button rather than a bare URL, and leave the door open for a reply. More wording ideas are in our DM templates.

Know which one is working

Whichever you use, measure it. Use tracked links in your DMs — JaldiDM's Track Your Links feature counts clicks on links sent in DMs — and compare against your bio link's traffic in your website analytics. Our guide to measuring DM conversions explains a simple way to do it.
