Instagram Automation Checklist: Test Before You Go Live

A pre-launch checklist for Instagram automation: account, trigger, public reply, DM, Instagram rules, human handover and testing before you switch it on.

October 29, 2026 6 min read

The worst time to discover a broken link is after your reel has 40,000 views. Before you flip an Instagram automation to “on”, spend fifteen minutes going through this checklist. It is written for a small business or creator in India setting up comment-to-DM, story replies or a first-DM greeting — but most of it applies to any automation.

Go through it top to bottom. Tick each item only when you've actually checked it.

Part A — Account and connection

  • ☐ Your account is professional (Business or Creator). Personal accounts can't connect. If needed: switch to a professional account.
  • ☐ You connected through Instagram's official login, not by typing your password into a third-party form.
  • ☐ Message access for connected tools is allowed in your Instagram message settings (the option name changes over time — check the Help Centre if you can't find it).
  • ☐ The right account is connected — easy to mix up if you manage several brands.

Part B — Trigger

  • ☐ Scope is decided: one specific post or reel, or all posts?
  • ☐ Keyword or any comment? Keyword for a campaign (“comment LINK”); any comment only if your DM makes sense for everyone, including people who just wrote “nice 🔥”.
  • ☐ The keyword is short and obvious. One ordinary word, ideally the one in your caption.
  • ☐ Common variations are covered: “price”, “rate”, “kitne ka”, “cost”. A tool with word-form matching handles plurals and sentences; add Hindi or Hinglish words yourself.
  • ☐ No overlap surprises. If an “All posts” automation already exists, you know which one will answer on this reel. (In JaldiDM the more specific one wins.)

Part C — Public reply

  • ☐ Three or more variations, so the thread doesn't look copy-pasted.
  • ☐ No price or link in the public reply — that belongs in the DM.
  • ☐ At least one variation mentions Requests: “DM bheja hai, Requests bhi check karna 📩”. Non-followers often find your DM there — see message requests explained.

Part D — The DM itself

  • ☐ The first two lines answer the question they asked.
  • ☐ It reads well on a phone — short lines, no huge paragraphs.
  • ☐ Exactly one main button or link for the next step.
  • ☐ Prices, sizes and dates are current. No last season's offer.
  • ☐ Every link opens on mobile, and goes to the right product, not the home page.
  • ☐ Link tracking is on if your tool supports it, so you can see which reel drove clicks.
  • ☐ Tone matches your brand. A law firm and a streetwear label shouldn't sound the same.

A DM that passes Part D might look like this:

“Hi! The handmade Kolhapuri chappals are ₹1,150 a pair, delivery in 4–6 days across India. Tap below to pick your size 👇”

Part E — Optional steps

  • ☐ Follow-before-link: only if this is a freebie or giveaway. Turn it off for price enquiries.
  • ☐ Phone number capture: on for high-value enquiries; the wording tells people why you want it (“so our team can call you with available slots”).
  • ☐ AI replies: if you use them, your FAQs are up to date — the AI can only be as accurate as what you give it.

Part F — Instagram rules

  • ☐ You understand that a comment allows one private reply, within 7 days — private replies explained.
  • ☐ Any follow-up messages come after the person replies or taps a button, inside the 24-hour window.
  • ☐ You're only messaging people who commented or messaged first. No cold DMs.

Part G — Humans

  • ☐ There's a clear way to reach a person: a button, or a line like “Reply HELP”.
  • ☐ Someone is named as the owner of the inbox, with set times to check it.
  • ☐ Your team knows that complaints, refunds and bargaining are always handled by a human, not the automation.
  • ☐ Your team knows which posts are automated, so nobody sends a second manual DM.

Part H — Test before launch

  1. From a second account that doesn't follow you, comment the keyword.
  2. Check the public reply appeared.
  3. Find the DM (look in Requests on the test account).
  4. Tap every button. Open every link.
  5. Comment something unrelated (“nice”) and confirm what happens is what you intended.
  6. Check the conversation shows up correctly in your inbox and any lead lands in your Leads list.

If the test fails, our troubleshooting guide covers the usual causes.

Part I — After launch

  • ☐ Check the first real replies within an hour of posting.
  • ☐ Look at analytics after a few days — which reels bring DMs, which links get clicks.
  • ☐ Put a reminder in your calendar to switch off time-limited offers.
