Instagram DM automation not working? Start here

Instagram DM automation not working? The nine real causes — a draft automation, an expired token, a keyword mismatch — and the exact fix for each one.

If your Instagram DM automation is not working, it is almost never a mystery — it is one of about nine things, and the first three cover most of them. Every JaldiDM automation shows its recent runs, so look there before changing anything: no run listed means the comment never reached us, and the problem is setup or connection. A run listed with no DM means the problem came after.

Check these three first

  1. Is the automation actually live? A draft looks finished and does nothing. Open it and confirm it is set live, not saved.
  2. Is your Instagram account still connected? Access tokens expire and accounts get disconnected. If the dashboard is asking you to reconnect, nothing will fire until you do.
  3. Does the keyword match what people typed? An extra emoji, a plural, a different spelling — any of those and the trigger passes over the comment.

1. The automation is saved as a draft

The single most common reason. You built it, wrote the DM, admired it and closed the tab. Open the automation and check its status: if it is a draft, set it live and comment your own keyword from a second account to confirm. If a run now appears, you are done.

2. The account is disconnected or the token expired

Access tokens expire, and changing your Instagram or Facebook password, revoking permissions or unlinking the Page all cut the connection. The tell is that every automation stops at once, not just one. Reauthorize from your connected accounts, logged into Facebook as the person who owns the Page, and grant every permission it asks for — skipping one messaging permission is enough to break sending.

3. The keyword does not match what people actually typed

People do not type your keyword the way you wrote it. They add a fire emoji, they write “links” instead of “LINK”, they misspell it, or they write a whole sentence around it. Open the post, read the real comments, and add every variation you see as an extra keyword on the same automation. Short, unmistakable words work best. Our guide to keyword triggers covers how to pick words that fire reliably without catching ordinary conversation.

4. The automation is attached to a different post

If it works on one post and not another, this is why. An automation is either tied to one specific post or set to apply to any post. People commonly build it for a launch post, then wonder why the next reel does nothing. Check which post the automation is watching, and if you want it running on everything you publish, set it to apply to any post instead of picking one. See how comment-to-DM automations are wired if you are unsure which mode yours is in.

5. The account is not Professional, or not linked to a Facebook Page

Instagram only grants messaging permissions to a Professional account — Business or Creator — linked to a Facebook Page. If the account was switched back to personal, or the Page was unpublished or deleted, sending stops. Switch back to Professional in Instagram settings, relink the Page, then reconnect in JaldiDM.

6. The subscription expired

An inactive plan stops replies going out. If your trial ended or a payment did not go through, automations stay exactly as you built them but nothing is sent. Check your billing status — Pro is ₹399/month, Pro Plus ₹999/month, or ₹2,599/year — and replies resume once the plan is active again.

7. Instagram's 24-hour messaging window closed

Once someone messages you, Instagram allows free-form replies for 24 hours. After that, a normal DM can no longer be sent to that person. This is Instagram's rule and applies to every compliant tool, so it usually shows up as older conversations failing while new commenters get their DM instantly. There is more on the limits Instagram enforces in our automation safety guide.

8. That person already triggered it

A repeat comment from someone who already received the DM will not necessarily send it again. If you have been testing from the same account all morning, that is very likely what you are looking at. Re-test from an account that has never triggered it.

9. Media Instagram cannot render

If the DM sends when it is plain text but fails with a card or image, suspect the file. Instagram does not render WebP, so a WebP upload will make a media or product card fail. Re-upload the image as JPEG or PNG and send again.

Still stuck?

Whether an event arrived at all splits every remaining problem in two. No event means connection, account type or post targeting; an event with no DM means the window, a repeat trigger, a plan issue, or media. For a second pair of eyes, we have a WhatsApp support number and you can email info@jaldidm.com — send the automation name and roughly when the comment was posted, and it is far faster to trace. Once it is firing again, our public comment reply automations pair well with comment-to-DM so people can see the reply landed.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Instagram DM automation not working?

In most cases the automation is still saved as a draft rather than set live, the Instagram account has been disconnected and needs reconnecting, or the keyword does not match what people actually typed. Open the automation and check its recent runs first — if no run is listed, the comment never reached us, which points at setup or connection rather than sending.

My comment to DM is not sending — where do I look?

Check that the automation is attached to the post being commented on; an automation tied to one post will not fire on a different reel. Then confirm the person has not already triggered it, since a repeat comment from the same person does not necessarily send the DM again. Testing from a fresh account rules that out in seconds.

Why does my Instagram keyword trigger not fire?

Keyword matching fails when the comment carries an extra emoji, a plural, or a different spelling from the word you set. Read the real comments on the post and add every variation you see as an additional keyword on the same automation. Short, unmistakable words like LINK or PRICE fire far more reliably.

My Instagram automation stopped working suddenly — what changed?

If every automation stopped at once rather than just one, the access token has usually expired or the account was disconnected, which happens after a password change, revoked permissions, or an unlinked Facebook Page. Reauthorize from your connected accounts and grant every permission requested. An expired subscription will also stop replies going out while leaving the automations intact.

Why did the DM send as text but fail with an image or card?

Instagram does not render WebP images, so a WebP upload can make a media or product card fail even when the same automation sends plain text fine. Re-upload the image as JPEG or PNG and send again. If plain-text DMs are failing too, the 24-hour messaging window on that conversation has likely closed.
